Contemplation and Transformation: Becoming What We Watch

One of the key insights I've learned through my spiritual journey is that we are transformed by what we contemplate. This idea is crucial when discussing pornography. We become what we watch, what we focus on, and the environments we immerse ourselves in. The path to transformation is through contemplation. What we look at, what we watch, and the world we live in shape us.

This is why the Bible tells us we are transformed from glory to glory as we contemplate God's presence. But, there’s also a warning in Psalm 115: those who worship idols become like them. They have mouths but cannot speak, eyes but cannot see, feet but cannot walk. They become empty, lifeless images. This illustrates the deep impact of our choices, especially in the realm of what we choose to contemplate.

Pornography as a Distortion of Our Desire for Intimacy

Pornography is a counterfeit of what we truly desire: intimacy. It promises pleasure, connection, and intimacy, but it fails to satisfy. Instead, it leaves us yearning for more, never truly filling the void it promises. The deeper you go into this cycle, the more disconnected you feel from the true source of intimacy: God.

Through Christ, we now have access to the divine presence, to the glory of God that we were once separated from. The veil in the temple was torn, and with that, we gained intimate access to the source of true satisfaction and pleasure. This is God’s invitation to us – to find satisfaction, not in fleeting pleasures, but in the eternal presence of the One who knows us completely.

God’s Compassion for Those Caught in the Trap

The most powerful truth in this spiritual battle is that God is not angry at you for struggling with pornography; He is filled with compassion for you. His anger is not directed at you as a person, but at the sin that traps you. God’s heart is one of love and mercy, not condemnation.

This is evident when we look at how Jesus responded to the broken and suffering people He encountered. Whether it was the blind man, the lepers, or the widow mourning her son, Jesus was moved by compassion. He came into the world to redeem, to rescue, and to bring healing to those who were lost.

God is calling you to come closer, to return to His presence. No matter how many times you’ve fallen, He is always ready to welcome you with open arms. It’s not because you are worthy on your own, but because Christ’s holiness has been shared with you through the cross.

Breaking Free from the Chains: Spiritual Weapons Against Strongholds

Pornography creates strongholds in the mind. As Paul writes in 2 Corinthians, the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds. These strongholds are mental prisons, fortified places that keep us trapped in cycles of sin and shame.

But we have spiritual weapons at our disposal. These are powerful tools that can break the chains that pornography has over you. The key is to learn how to wield these weapons effectively. A weapon is only powerful if you know how to use it. In the same way, spiritual disciplines, like prayer, fasting, and meditation on God’s Word, are tools that empower you to break free from the strongholds of pornography.

Embracing True Intimacy with God

Pornography is ultimately a cry for intimacy, a longing for connection. But God offers a far better way—a relationship based on covenant and trust. Unlike pornography, which leads to isolation and emptiness, God calls us into a place of real intimacy and fulfillment.

The pursuit of pornography is a distorted version of God’s invitation to intimacy. The good news is that God is calling you out of that cycle and into a deeper relationship with Him. He has already made a covenant with you through Christ, offering you access to His presence and true intimacy.

Conclusion: A Call to Transformation and Redemption

If you're struggling with pornography, know that God is not condemning you. He is calling you to step out of the cycle and into His redemptive grace. God's compassion and mercy are waiting for you. The battle against pornography is not just about resisting temptation; it’s about learning to seek true intimacy with God through the spiritual disciplines He has given us.

The path to freedom is available. It requires embracing the transformation that comes through contemplating God's glory, rejecting the counterfeit promises of pornography, and allowing the Spirit to break the strongholds in your life. Today is the day to make that choice.

Remember, God loves you, and He is with you every step of the way in your journey toward true freedom and intimacy.
